Once the big daddy of Inverness pubs, Foxes used to be busy on any given night of the week, although whether that was due to the lack of other options at the time is up to you.
It does have a great location and serves reasonable pub food. Also, the booths are a good thing if you don't want to look at the regulars.
URBarred Second Opinion
Although I agree with the above, I have seen countless number of piss poor bar bands playing the same old pub rock covers here night after night. Frankly, it makes me wince whenever I hear the same, terrible versions of Mustang Sally or that Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel song. Needs to do something new.Leave a comment now...

I went to foxes on a cold pissing wet night, not expecting
much, but this guy davey levon was by himself singing and playing a great mix of tunes on guitar, beer was good, staff smiling great atmosphere folk dancing all good defo go back.
This place? Absolutely awful! Dangerous too!! Have to practically climb over people to have any chance of getting a drink. Beer is rubbish also.
I often frequent The Den and J Foxes on a Saturday night, but I'm not enjoying it as much as I used to.
Firstly, the wooden floor is swimming in beer. High heels and a wet floor do not make a happy night for many girls.
The prices of drinks are scary, the bar staff are scary and the men are mostly foul creatures.
I've spent my last Sat night in The Den!
Such mixed reviews, I am not going to make it any better. I've been to Foxes/Den twice in the last month, and both times had a good night, but thats down the company. The first visit, the barstaff in the Den were great, but then it was quiet. The second time the guy who served us could not look less interested, was sticking his chewing gum in and out of his mouth, and actually sighed and rolled his eyes when I tried to pay with my card. Not the service you expect when you are spending £50 a round.
Had a visit recently, first in long time, and still v poor. Door staff obnoxious as per usual, but this is what you get when the one company has a monopoly in a town. Have actually witnessed the management of this company pressuring a landlord to try and get him to pay for another doorman when he didnt want/need another. He stood up to them but they were quite in his face. The prices in the den are utterly ridiculous. I felt quite out of place amongst all the `pretty people` lol
Very little that i like the place the staff are freindly when they eventualy see you and bother to serve you but when you can stand at the bar with no one else around for 20mins before you get noticed by the staff who are chatting away.
Both the food and the drinks i feel are over priced eaten there on a number of occasions now and never been very impressed.
In all fairness Raven's Claw, my haggis/chicken was actually pretty tasty! The other meals were pretty disappointing. Perhaps the kitchen was just having an off day? We've had some decent pub grub there in the past. Has anyone else had food in here recently?
People on here say it has nice food - I do not agree.
£9 for the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Extremely greasy fish (clearly not drained after leaving the frier) which was just layed ontop of already fairly pathetic chips turning them into a greasy potato mulch. This does not seem to be an exception as nobody in my group who all ordered something different from the menu seemed pleased with the dish they chose. Overcooked burger - flavourless fajita with vegitables that just dont go with the dish (brocolli) to name just two comments. Not value for money at all.
A bit on the expensive side, but the staff were nice and friendly.
The bar staff are terrible. Music is terrible. Drinks are expensive. But it's open until 3am midweek.
I once ordered a pizza and I was informed that a bouncer had eaten it before it left the kitchen.
Me and my husband are over from the states and was recommended to come here by our b&b. Came in and had some dinner stayed for the band was a great night.
I was in last week and had a coffee and cupcake ( which was AMAZING ) Just makes Johnny Foxes even better. Love how me and my friends can come in and get the craic with anyone in there very friendly pub. It does attract the hotties.
SO still the big daddy! This pub has it all. Great new menu, which is huge! Open late, staff are really friendly even when they are as busy as they are. Disagree with the comment on the doorstaff too, they seem like really nice guys and are always welcoming and helpful. The connection through to the den is a great idea! Love those cocktails!!!
Can get uncomforably busy on weekend evenings. Quite expensive and doorstaff can be quite self-important. Despite all of this it is still the big boy of Inverness pubs. Is very nice on sunny days out in the beer-garden.
The door staff on this pub are bullies and think they own the pub if i was the owner i would get rid of **** ***** and get in another door security group... I like this pub but these thugs are just spoiling a nice and friendly atmosphere..This is why it has got a 1 rating from me.. I am not surprised it has fallen down the pub ranks in Inverness.. Time for a change i think... Disappointed customer and i will not be back until things change....
Our opinion of Johnny Foxes has slipped slightly since we last visited.
A couple of the real nice dishes have gone off the menu, and you no longer get the complimentary crustry bread with that lovely dip when you have a meal in the evening, that was a really nice touch and a shame it gone.
On out first visit the Guinness was average at best, but to be fair it was the first time I have ever had a pint in there that was not of good quality. The food standard, although still very good, has slipped. Pie was steaming hot and would take the skin off you mouth but the veg and potatoes were luke warm at best.
I would not rule out eating there again, but its just the little slips that you notice more, especially when you are only in Inverness a couple of times a year.
On our second visit the Guinness was back to its best.
BRING BACK THE VENISON!
One of the best places to go to during the week, the weekends can get cramped but this has improved since the Den has opened. Once had a funny tasting pint after the taps were cleaned but apart from that pints are great especially the black stuff obviously. Drink isn't cheap though. Food is good too. Staff are nice. It is a relaxed environment that has a wide range of age groups going in so its good for maybe a family going out to celebrate a birthday or something. It feels safe. Don't turn up blazin drunk or get to pissed once inside cause the bouncers will chuck you though they are quite polite about it.
Good music, at least the twice Ive been in 09.
Nice bar staff.
Got too busy for comfort though later on, much shoogling and canoodling, hen nights etc - fine if you like that sort of thing.
Classed as an Irish theme pub...well sort of? Always busy in the evenings. Good points are its live music, bad points are it gets busy, prices are high, and when its sunny and you want to sit outside you can't and are surrounded by the smokers! There are better boozers in town
Top irish "theme pub" in town. Can't really fault it, great craic. A good old boozer with loads of character.
Great location! Sunny day and a drink in ur hand! Can't beat it.
Currently undergoing a refit so prepare to be confused as the ladies is now where the gents was and the gents is currently a builders portacabin out front. The ahem workmen seemed to be making best use of the facilities on Saturday. If anyone was in last Sunday night can they explain why the band got told to stop by the manager - bizarre
Saw a great band on thursday night called Hugo Drax. Only planned staying for a couple of pints but ended up staying until the end, played a mix of seventies and eighties stuff which seemed to have everyone in there jumping about like mad. Haven't seen them before and don't know if they are local but worth looking out for. A great night
Cant say a bad word about this place, the best pint of Guinness I have had for a very long time, but you would expect that from an Irish pub. The food was fantastic, all freshly made while you wait, good sized portions accompanied with fresh crisp veg, not re-heated rubbish you get in some places, top marks.
this must be the worst place i have ever been in 4 live music. a tiny stage barley enough room 4 2 people.staff absolutly non existant unless u know them.avoid at all costs.
Probably still Inverness' best venue for live music and they have some sort of entertainment laid on every night!!
The food is reasonable but the drink is slightly overpriced in my opinion. Ive seen some awesome bands and some rubbish and it doesnt seem to bother the well oiled crowd how good or bad they are.
The crowd are so mixed I think you could possibly say its an 18-80 holiday!
Bouncers can be a bit mean at times however give them their due they can normally spot trouble before it gets into their pub!! Most of the bar staff are reasonably friendly however they look after their own, on a Saturday night you could be sober by the time you actually get a pint!
One of the only pubs in Inverness to still have the 2am late license and you can guarantee it will be packed right up to closing.
Their best bands to try and spot are Arthur / R4, Ezra, Rant, Crash Banjos!!
The band in Johnny Foxes last weekend were fantastic, its well worth checking them out! They are called Rant and played an incredible mix of music. Their version of KT Tunstall`s "Other Side Of The World" was outstanding . I can`t wait to hear them again !
Well done RANT !!!
The bar staff and bouncers coped great considering how busy it was , they were cheery , friendly and polite .
I thought the staff were pretty cheery. Oh well, what do I know? Great bar when it's busy. Inverness's number 1 music venue I'm led to believe, and I would tend to agree.
No wonder the place has gone downhill, they would employ anyone!! The staff are AWFUL! A smile wouldn't go amiss! Not like it used to be and it's still the same owner! What a joke!!
ALWAY a huge que at the door, then u wait ages 2 be served and before ya know it there is dirty old men tryin 2 chat ya up! Staff are good laugh but the place is 2 busy and all the wrong punters in it... Door staff are fab though!
always to busy and to hot and takes forever to get served. a group of us waited 30 mins to get served and it wasnt even that busy the night we were in.
Que at door was a put off right away means its crammed full so will be no chance getting served by the not so cheery staff! where have they all gone? air conditionng no way too stuffy headed up the road to the old bank of scotland mmm what's it called now? cheery staff Laura behind the bar who works weekends lovely happy lassie and by the way congratulations to her she's expecting her first baby does not stop her wiping tables busy lass she's not milking it anyway
havent been in ages, but heard the rumours re poor service. had mates go in on a sunny hot day earlier this year, tables outside were full to capacity (fair enuff) but inside literally empty apart from staff, mates stood for FIVE mins waiting to be served but despite polite throat clearing and nods and looks to the staff was ignored. they left in disgust. unbelievable. i reckon those who say the staff are great probably know them anyway and therefore get served well. not wot u know but who - mind u thats sneckie all over isnt it.
This place is getting worse, i swear i've never seen such a bunch of miserable, ignorant staff in my life. Drink too dear, place over crowded, just a bad atmo. Give it a miss next time i'm up i think!
Always too busy and massively overpriced drink, beer selection at best poor but I always seem to end up going here why?????????????????
The drink in this establishment never sticks to the side of the glass because the glasses are not clean enough. You could die of thirst for the amount of time they take to serve you. There are far better places in town so don't bother with this one is my advice.
Out for a quiet pint after work and everything was fine until the door monkeys decided to give me a hard time for no good reason other than I was alone with no one for backup, the heroes.
Went to Inverness last weekend on a Stag Do. This was the first pub that we entered when we hit the town at night. It was shaping up to be a really good night, until one of our party decided to head outside for a smoke. Myself and another mate went outside with him for a breather. Anyway, we're standing right infront of the bouncers at the head of the queue until my mate finishes his fag and we decide to head back in.
AR$EHOLE ALERT. The bouncer (obviously suffering from small man syndrome), decided that we couldn't get back in because we didn't have a pass/stamp, despite the fact that he knew fine well that we had just come out 5 mins previously.
The result was that the stag was split up on the 1st night, and we then found out that there is a curfew operating in Inverness. We were fortunate to get into the bar across the bridge from JF's on the corner (names please) where we shared some good banter with the locals.
Apart from the hard man (no laughing please) on the door, we all had a great time in Inverness. The people were so friendly. Will defo be coming back with the Mrs for a long weekend.
The Bellshill Rumbler.
groundhog day!
Service really lets this place down, the staff take forever!
foods excellent, with generous helpings and staff are very pleasant!! some pretty good bands aswell
Its really rubbish, used to be the best of a bad bunch in Inverness but as of late has been shown up for what it really is...PISH
The same bands playing the same songs week in week out
I concur, the service here is sh(one)T!!
Plus it's not cheap!!
STAFF A DISAPPOINTMENT IN WELL LAID OUT BAR THAT SHOULD MAKE GETTING SERVED EASY. EXCELENT FOOD,CLEAN PUB, RUBBISH BAR STAFF. TOOK SO LONG TO BE SERVED I WAS TEMPTED TO TURN TEA TOTAL(WAS NEVER REALLY GOING TO HAPPEN). DESPITE POOR SERVICE IT IS STILL IN TOP 5 CITY CENTRE PUBS. BANDS OK AND BUSY BEFORE MIDNIGHT. (A RARITY IN "CITY" CENTRE)
Was in tonight and left after 25 min of waiting to get served... really sad. Went to the glen of all places and got served in ten seconds. it was busy too. lol
I just want to say hi to the fat slapper in the pink limo who, when we were sitting in a booth by the window here the other week, rolled down the window, made rude gestures and then lifted up her denim skirt to show us her far too small g-string and spotty arse. You almost made me sick.
I think this bar is unfairly regarded as a 'cheesy' place. I reckon you can meet a huge range of folk in here all having a good time.
MEAT MARKET????
