93-95 Academy St,
Inverness,
IV1 1LU
Traditional pub at the bottom of Academy Street, Blackfriars has music on most Friday and Saturday nights although it's mostly overly loud blues rock.
With a real mix of customer ages, it's one of the Inverness pubs where over 30s don't have to feel out of place.
Attracts a lot of backpackers during the summer for ceilidh nights, leading to some of the local youths venturing in in the hope of 'pulling a toorist girl'.

I was told it was up for sale! I'm not surprised, the landlord has an appalling attitude to his customers, it's like he's doing you a favour evrytime he serves you?
I am quite surprised at some of the comments on here about this place, Although when we were there the landlord threw a guy out, but he was smashed at dinnertime, and had 'Just come up from Glasgow for some wallpaper paste' I though it was very funny.
I rate the Castle Tavern very highly for their real ale and the quality it is kept at, and Blackfriars is right up there with it, these two are real gems when it comes to a good pint of real ale that your not going to find in every bar (Caledonian IPA is everywhere) thats got a real ale to choose!
We visited 3 or 4 times during our stay, and really enjoyed a nice quiet Friday evening in there, only a dozen or so in, but the staff were superb, very friendly, helpful with drinks, tasting samples of real ales and advice on whisky, and took the time out to make us feel welcome, I really can't fault any pub that puts that bot of effort in to make you feel welcome, especially when your obviously not local.
Highly recommended to anyone visiting Inverness.
Not yet tried the food but it looks fantastic.
Cant understand why Blackfriars isnt busier - we popped in last night and found it very warm, welcoming and, most importantly, serving great beer again (hadn't been since 2 years ago, seems much improved).
Nice, relaxed atmosphere, no idiots, maybe too quiet for some maybe but we like that sometimes!
Why do pubs feel the need to drown vodkas with half pints of coke!!!!
As a regular drinker at Blackfriars the owner of Blackfriars has let me down massively by his actions recently, banning people for simply dancing - OUTRAGEOUS!! Drinking in your own pub then throwing people out willy-nilly, not the way to keep your paying customers I would suggest. Is it really a positive message to send out by dispatching folk appearing to be enjoying themselves? Hmmmm... A great pub unfortunately ruined by one man - I will never be setting foot inside this place whilst this man remains in charge. Pah!!
I was a happy Blackfriars punter until we met the owner (so he claimed) last night. What a rude, arrogant little sh*t of a man. He seems intent on ensuring nobody had a good time - puts on a swing band then complains when people start to dance outwith the 'designated' area. I even attempted to apologise for my impromptu dance but still was asked to leave along with a few other people !! I wont be back !!
what a disappointment, expensive & not very good pints, no atmosphere & a very full of himself bar man
It appears that if a pub is taken over in this area of town it instantly becomes a disaster. First Lafferties (Dinos) turns crap and now this place follows suit. Is there a gypsy curse on Academy Street? There certainly appears to be something going on - A Church lead conspiracy i bet.
3 customers early(8-9PM) on a night when the Ironworks was packed. Doesn't bode well for the new owners.
I'm out of town now, but I used to love Blackfriars...one of the few places where you could get good real ales (and they knew how to take care of them too), and the staff were really nice too. If the staff have been fired, and if the ale is off, then I won't bother going back...:-(
Not been in a while but certainly i've enjoyed it in the past.
Just a wee update - the new manager, who starts on Feb the 1st, is making all the staff redundant.
He is also removing the ale taps (why? It'sone of the few things that the place has going for it!)
Not sure if this is heading ina good direction or not...
Watch this space...
For this one, I agree with the Raven's Claw, a cracking pub that you could easily miss as it's out of the way.
With a bit more advertising and some more imaginative meals on the menu, this pub should rock!
This is a cracking pub and well worth a visit on a wednesday night during summer for the mini ceilidh.
