The Caledonian (Smith & Jones)

High Street
Inverness
On first impression, this bar would seem to be named after the greatest football team Inverness has ever seen - Caledonian FC. Does it do the legendary club justice? No. The Caledonian is one of those boring chain bars populating every city centre in the land these days. The main charcteristics of which are cliched decor, the same old music and no atmosphere. The only way to sum up this place would be to say that it is to real pubs what Inverness Caley Thistle are to Caledonian FC - a bland, soulless, substitute. Only an opinion, like.

Just for the record I am an OLD FUDDY DUDDY at age 57 yrs young but I can tell you now that on at least 5 trips to Inverness I find the best place to eat and enjoy oneself is the Caledonian. I have tried other places but always come back to this one. Fair prices for fine food and drink, friendly to all. A great place to enjoy oneself for a meal and drinks.
OMG, what a bunch of moaning b$£%*rds like, if you's dont like it then dont go. Or you're just old and don't have a life at all, since this place opened i am a highly regular user of this pub for meals and drinks. I go every weekend too and haven't had any problems at all. Good on ya's too the staff and management for a great pub and cant wait till ya's open Miami in a few weeks!!
Dark dingy entrance rude obnoxious male at bar not used to this sort of impolite behavior when going for lunch or at anytime...spent my money elsewhere.definitely will never go back
i wouldnt even give this place 1 star
my family went out for a nice day in inverness and decided we'd go to a nice little pub for a nice meal
however the place was dark, unwelcoming and to be honest smelled a little mouldy
we walked into the bar and fair enough we were a bit hustle an bustle because we had been shopping and had three kids with us, the oldest child is 4 and was a little hyper running about a little, but he was just excited its not like it was busy there was one couple in eating
a man that worked there (im assuming is the manager) shouted at the 4 year old and told him to "calm the hell down"
my mum then asked if we could eat here
and the man replied not too politely
" not if they're going to act like that your not"
so we left, the looks we got of the staff you'd think we were the anti christ
we ended up going to mcdonalds, and still ended up having fun, although by reading these reveiws i'm glad we didnt waste our money in that disgusting place
Bit of a t***ers gathering this place. Food is horrible microwaved s**t. Only good for one pint whilst deciding where to go next .
Not a massive fan of this place, its OK for a quick drink in the afternoon when your deciding what to next. Along the lines of a Wetherspoons, except with music, and no real ale! Think we will stick with spoons!
Seems to be the in-place for fake tans and cheap bling - Snog, Marry or Avoid should film here, they'd have a field day. Not sure the place isn't slightly confused as to the Inverness shiny wannabees, the apprentice chavs or those pretending they didn't buy their bling at Elizabeth Duke @ Argos. Topped only of course by make-up plastered vicky pollard types and wannabe cardboard gangsters.
Could be a good place if the management didn't turn a blind eye and try and pretend to be mates wi the ned element just to keep them loud and buying drink.
I recently was dragged back into to Smith and Jones after having a bad experience with the place early 2008. I can honestly say i have never had to much fun in my life. I went there on Sunday for the cash kareoke, and the DJ was really funny and messed around and had a laugh. No-one takes themselves too seriously and the staff are all really friendly. the 4 of us also had dinner before our drinks, and the Steak and Ale Pie was immense! Defo worth going back there as it seems the old managment have been replaced and it is nothing like it used to be!!! Worth a retry, honestly!
Decent pub to drop in for a beer. Never been there at weekend nights when apparently it does get busy. I've eaten tehre a few times and never experienced problems with the food or service, it is however similar food to Weatherspoons!
Busy enough boozer with a not bad atmosphere. Standard chain type pub. Seemed to contain quite a ned element when there (and that was a Saturday afternoon!!)
I think that the manager in here is one of the worst that ive ever met! I myself am an experienced bar manager. I went in with 5 friends after Rockness for food. Our post mix cokes were off and when we complained, we were told that we could leave them or pay for replacements at £2 pint! Secondly our food orders were wrong when they arrived. I think that for a new pub this is shocking customer service especially from a so called manager!
bar looks nice reasonable prices on drink but service on food is disgusting, ordered 2 mains for myself and friend once, waited 30 mins and went to bar to which i was told they forgot to put order through. This has been second time this has happened to me and another punter was also up at bar complaining about lack of food which he ordered 40 mins prior
its a lovely bar, just a shame about the management in the place. get some new management in, get a juke box, and the place will be sorted. oh and get rid of the no head gear policy - baseball caps fair enough, but ive seen poor old pensioners that have been told to take their hats off which i think is taking it to far.
OK nice bar about time Inverness had somewhere nice to go but food!!! I recieved my prawn wrap minus the prawns, my friend son's meal was stone cold and it didn't even arrive altogether my friend didn't get her burger until I finished my wrap and that was after me sending it back!!! My advice if your looking to eat here go when it is quiet they cant seem to handle more that 4 tables for food service. Nice watering hole, always good for a few drinks.
Its allright, its not great and its not bad, its just another corporate rollout - upmarket weatherspoons. Food service needs some serious work though.
agree with last comment, i like this bar as well, very smart inside and a good place to start the night. been in a couple of times for food and was pretty decent.
totally disagree with everything urbarred have said in their review to be honest - especially the caley thistle comments!!! (and the greatest team inverness has ever seen was undoubtably the j*ggies!)
liked this bar plenty room great service and with a smile you don't see alot of that in inverness pubs back ground music good selection, only one draw back here map at front door too toilets don't like hiking but over all friendly bar staff and door staff A1 to cheery laura bar maid
This place is a good thing for Inverness. The more places like this that draw the Inverness Tubes away from the good bars the better. Bring in more chain pubs!!
Ok I agree in part with what urbarred has said about the Caley Bar.
However, I will add the bar does have one of the nicest lagers - Staropramen - on draft and it only costs £2.70 (take note Pivo lovers yer being ripped off).
I totally agree with Urbarred. What does this bar bring to Inverness? Not a lot - totally bland and devoid of atmosphere.
Oh and also, it only about has 4 beers on tap: Stella, Carling, Fosters & Tennents. Seem familiar?
