Hootananny - Ceilidh Bar Inverness

31 Church Street,
Inverness
IV1 1ES

Hootananny is a pub on three floors and arguably the busiest in Inverness. The ground floor is the Ceilidh bar where you can find Scottish folk music most nights. They also have a really good up and coming bands play too so it's worth checking what's on in Hootanannys.

This place invites a lot of wealthy tourist types and you are likely to see many middled aged men in big woolly jumpers and rich old-money types from the country side who own land, lots of land. It has a very Scottish theme but strangely serves Thai food.

It's definitely worth check out the Madhatters bar upstairs too, it attracts a much younger crowd. Serves that Black Isle Brewery stuff which, I'm told, gets you absolutely steamboats.

This place is an over-priced hellhole. The drinks are very expensive and to top that you don't even get ice in your drink. Disgusting toilets do not match the prices charged.

The bar staff seem to be unhappy to serve and more intent on speaking to each other. Maybe that is why the drinks are so expensive to offset the drinks that could be sold during "chat time". Get a grip of this place Kit.

I agree with Slim Shady, highly over-rated!

Traditional Highland Ceilidh Bar (or words to that effect on the sign outside). And they serve Thai food? What's traditional and Highland about that?

This place was opened to make huge profits for one greedy person.

Tried the food here once but I will not be back for a second helping, it was like trying to eat soup with a fork.

We generally visit in the afternoons when we are up in Inverness, Always been a nice drink, especially when they have the Blask Isle Heather Honey on, lovely pint.

Background music is what it should be, background. Its here to hear but you can sit and have a chat without it getting on your nerves.

Only thing that I dont like is when the food starts and that Thai guy is forever wandering round you wiping tables nobody has sat at since he last wiped it, and hovering round as soon as you pick a menu up to have a look and asking you if you want to order, I don't even look at the menu now or you know her will be over!

SAdly on this visit we were not in town over the weekend and missed out on the cracking acoustic stint there is on a Sunday afternoon, very relaxing, and again its background enough to sit and have a chat, but you can also sit and enjoy listening to him.

Always make a couple of stops here when we visit.

Well I had hoped to find something along the lines of the old Cummings Hotel and to some extents this was what I found on the Saturday. Good friendly people who'd chat to you whether they knew you or not. Unfortunately what spoiled the day was a very drunken wee nyaff on the piano who obviously rated himself and thought he was funny. Overbearing with plenty to say, and drowning out any other musician with his thumping on the piano does not make for a very nice afternoon and the people beside me left. Food was unusual in a Scottish bar (Thai) bu very nice and not too long to wait, but if it hadn't been for ordering the food then we would have left sooner. If musicians are going to try and entertain then please management make sure the're not pissed outa their faces. Prices are on the steep side for what the place is. When U stop caring about your pub, then the customers will stop caring about you and start to vote with their feet! The place has fantastic potential, but improvements are needed. Good luck!

Always busy but seems to attract the tourist crowd - and play on it with the choice of music

since it first opened the staff seem to be consistently very good - full marks to kit for that. but dont drink there very often now as u need a bank loan for the prices which is a shame. doesnt seem to keep the punters away though.

Dum-de-diddly, dum-de-diddly, dum-de-diddly di - repeat for 28 mins and pause for applause. Some of the music is dire, pretentious claptrap.

I popped in for a pint and was chatting to a man at the bar, when i went to get the second round in, the manager told me i had had enough when i asked him why he told me i had called the barmaid "lard ass" i have never said "lard ass" in my life and i'm not american so doubt i ever Shall.

I took a girl here (you know to get her drunk) and she was disgusted by the toilet.

I was in here with my mate Jason who said something to annoy me I slammed my pint down on the table but it slipped out my hand flew up in the air and came back down smashing on the table. To pretend i meant it i shouted something at him and walked out. He later told me the manager and doorman were not amused, i think they over reacted.

This is a good Thai food place, for quality and price.
True, too many lost tourists wander in and out again.

23 March 2007 Drunken Bum

I'd agree Larz. Like upstairs, this bar should definitely be bigger. I also like a pint of the Black Isle Blonde.

bands are usually very good, great craic. ignore the few stuck-up people and you can have quite a good time.only drawback is that its often packed full-should be bigger

Quite a good place to come for a quiet pint before 9pm. Afterwards i'd head upstairs.

Full of randoms, great craic, horny staff, amazing music, scrumpcious food and far too much drinkin!...........

15 January 2007 Infrequent Tippler

Bar staff are excellent but there are loads of drunk twats thinking they can dance but inevitably just keep banging into you - they are pure Jakeys!!!

Drinks/beer are always good but they are obviously short of glasses as you always get hot ones straight from the dishwasher!

Lots of visitors to the area in here which can make it an interesting evening talking about culture and all that...now where did I leave my knitting needles???

06 January 2007 Dee Elle

great craic in this pub!!

05 January 2007 Drunken Bum

Far too many posh farmer types who don't like getting dirty in here.
